The IfAA is looking forward to welcoming Barbara Dancygier (UBC) and Willem Hollmann (U Lancaster) as visiting professors. Barbara will teach an L3/L4 MA course on "Concept to text: cognitive underpinnings of discourse choices", Willem will teach a V2 BA course on "Cognitive Sociolinguistics". There are only very few places left in both courses, which take place 11-15 June, so please sign up asap with the office: ifaa@uos.de !!!

Der Achievement Test ist Bestandteil der neuen Prüfungsordnung und ersetzt die bisherigen Modulprüfungen, die das V4 (Sprachpraxis-)Modul (B.A.) im 4. Semester abschließen. Studierende, die in die APO gewechselt sind und das Modul V4 abgeschlossen haben, machen keinen Achievement Test, sondern eine mündliche Prüfung.

This course will introduce students to the concepts and methods of cognitive linguistics and cognitive poetics. We will start with basic concepts in cognitive linguistics (such as construal and framing) and an introduction to some of the theories within the discipline: metaphor theory, mental spaces and blending, and construction grammar. In the next part of the course we will engage in analyses of texts (journalistic prose, scientific discourse, advertising), to trace the specific ways in which various cognitive strategies are deployed and explain the meaning emergence processes involved. Finally, we will discuss the applicability of the theories and concepts to the reading and interpretation of literary texts. Overall, the goal of the class will be to introduce students to cognitive linguistic theories and also to help them understand the use of the theories in the areas of discourse they are particularly interested in.

Students will be expected to participate in the discussion of sample analyses in class and to work on some assigned examples at home.
